this.maybe because they don’t understand the concerts because they don’t go to concerts with pits. When I was in high school EVERYONE wanted to go see Dave Matthews Band and freakin Dashboard Confessional at these HUGE venues, and they’d all come back to school with their ~DMB tour shirts and their Dashboard stickers. And that’s great and all, but I honestly don’t think that they really …. ‘got’ what a concert really is to some people. A concert isn’t worth it if you’re sitting in the seats. It basically means that you’re paying money to sit down and watch some musicians, without really connecting. Sure, being crowded into a room with hundreds of other people might sound gross to some people, but really? It’s what we live for. We actually get excited about that. I know some people who like ‘my’ bands, but would never, ever go to a show of theirs because there are no seats for them to sit in. Some bands you just can’t do that with—you can’t sit down, because that’s not how those shows roll. Part of the show is being able to dance with the people around you, whether you know them or not. Singing all the words to all the songs. Crying at the songs that move you. Holding your hands up. Clapping. Catching picks. Holding someone’s hand. Eye contact. Singing into the microphone if it’s pointed at you. Crowdsurfing. Not fucking caring what anyone thinks about you or what you do. If people give you crap about going to concerts, tell them to shove it and go listen to their hip-hop and their rap and their musicians that honestly probably don’t give two shits about their fans. (I say this because if you think about it, when was the last time you heard of rappers hanging out with fans? Or even hip-hop artists. idk.) Part of the show is waiting outside to meet the band members that have changed your life, changed your views, written the thoughts we’ve had that we couldn’t find words to say. The pictures we freak out over and the conversations that we’ll never forget. The embarrassing thing that happened when we talked to that band guy that they just laughed off because they thought it was funny. The people we met while standing in line. The people we met in the pit. It’s no simple thing, a show. It’s an exciting night. It’s not just a band that we’re going to see on some random night. It’s something we’ve been waiting for. Tickets in hand, anticipation teeming. It’s not something we can forget easily, and it’s a high that doesn’t go away for a long time. It makes us different. Groups of three or four that decide to go to a concert together add up to hundreds of people going to a show. It separates our friday nights from their friday nights. Our friday nights are venues, friends, music and adding another track to the soundtrack of our lives.
